Possible Extension of Alcohol Free Zone

As such this consultation is closed. This page is for information only, for the current consultation please click here.

This consultation regards the possible extension of the Alcohol Consumption in Designated Public Places Order (Alcohol Free Zone) along De Parys Avenue, up to and including Burnaby Road.

The Borough Council’s General Licensing Committee has requested a report on the issue of anti-social behaviour linked to street drinking in the area of De Pary’s Avenue from the Broadway to Burnaby Road (and Burnaby Road itself).  This area is just outside of the current Alcohol Free Zone that covers a central area of Bedford Town.  Within the Zone it is an offence to continue to drink alcohol when warned to stop by a Police Constable.  The Police also have powers to confiscate alcohol from those committing the offence referred to.  The Police do not have these powers outside of the Zone.

The report to the General Licensing Committee will look at whether the area of De Pary’s Avenue from the Broadway to Burnaby Road (and Burnaby Road itself) should be designated as an Alcohol Free Zone.  At that time, the Members of the Committee would like to know your views on the issues of anti-social behaviour linked to street drinking in the area and whether to designate the area of De Pary’s Avenue as an Alcohol Free Zone.

In addition to the road way and the footpaths/pavements in the area it is possible to extend the designation of an Alcohol Free Zone to driveways, forecourts and other privately owned open areas accessible to the public from the road and footpaths/pavements. If you are a resident in the concerned area please let us know whether there is land at the property in which you occupy that you would like to also see designated.
