SUPERFAST BROADBAND PLANS IN BEDFORD BOROUGH

Bedford Borough Council was requested by Central Government to aid the rollout of Superfast Broadband by suppliers in order to increase coverage across the country. The Government’s policy is to provide funding to support the roll-out of superfast broadband to those areas of the UK where commercial roll-out is not economically viable.

The Council is working in partnership with BDUK (Broadband Delivery UK, part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) alongside Central Bedfordshire, Luton Borough and Milton Keynes Councils, to administer the Central Superfast Programme which is to upgrade the infrastructure in order to extend fibre broadband coverage across the four councils.

Under current projects, Bedford Borough will provide fibre broadband availability to over 97% of premises.

The fibre rollout is split into two phased projects which currently run until 2018/19.  We continue to seek additional funding to achieve further coverage in the future to reach our target of 100% coverage across the Borough.

BDUK3 PROJECT 2019: COMING SOON

· Project 3 (BDUK 3) is currently at the contract deployment negotiation stage. This is currently the final project and seeks to get superfast coverage for the final 2-3% of the area, with speeds of no less than 30Mbps.

· All the remaining unserved premises in Bedford Borough are eligible for funding and there was a requirement to cover as many of the remaining premises as possible with the funding available, however, we cannot guarantee that all properties will benefit. The main solution from the provider is FTTP.

· Details on the outcome & delivery plans will be shared as soon as possible. Work is due to take place between April and December 2019.

· There will be no further funding from the Government after BDUK 3. Any additional spend in the future will be from efficiency savings from existing/current projects.

Residents can benefit from the scheme as part of a group project which also includes businesses, and can claim for a voucher of up to a value of £500.

How to get involved in the scheme...

COMMUNITY LED BROADBAND SCHEMES

Over the past few years, a number of communities (both urban and rural) have successfully improved broadband access in their local area through a community led model. The Government has produced guidance to help community groups to access and benefit from potential models, case studies and funding options relevant to local broadband projects.
