Riverside Bedford

The recently completed Riverside Bedford, a £36m major waterfront scheme delivered in partnership with Bedford Borough Council, LinkCity and Coplan Estates, opened in summer 2017 and has been eagerly awaited.  the development features a 7 screen Vue cinema, 58 residential apartments, Premier Inn hotel, a large river-fronted public square and 8 restaurants including Wagamamas, MEXIco, GBK, Zizzi and Miller & Carter.  A new pedestrian river bridge improves links to the south of the town and better connects the town’s stunning River Great Ouse into the town centre.  It has also created 200 new jobs and will of course bring new visitors to Bedford, benefitting our existing businesses

Bedford High Street Regeneration

December 2016 saw the completion of the Townscape Heritage Initiative project on Bedford High Street.  This 5 year project, saw a partnership of Bedford Borough Council, Bedford BID, the Heritage Lottery Fund and landlords invest over £5m to transform the look and feel of the High Street.  The key aims of the THI project were to : 1) restore the existing fabric through structural repairs, façade and shopfront improvements and reinstate lost architectural detail; 2) to encourage more and different uses and activity within the buildings, brining vacant floorspace back into use; 3) to improve public realm and the access and movement around High Street.  The scheme:

  • Restored 16 properties
  • 33,999 sq ft of vacant floorspace has been brought back into use
  • 36 new residential dwellings, 6 new businesses have been created and 2 established independent local businesses attracted to High Street
  • Stimulated further private sector investment improvements to buildings
  • Attracted a total private sector investment of over £3.08 million from owners and tenants

Bedford Bus Station Area Redevelopment

Bedford's new Bus Station opened on 29th March 2015 and is now a travel point the borough can be proud of.  This £9.5m major regeneration project included a new departure hub and satellite waiting area at the front of the new Bus Station both with real-time display screens.  It also included:bus station

  • Award winning revamp of Allhallows Car Park including the toilets
  • New Greyfriars surface car park with 142 spaces
  • Environmental improvements including new paving, seating and tree planting
  • Enhanced shopfronts and better disabled access

 

The Higgins, Bedford

The Higgins Topping Out

The Higgins (Art Gallery and Museum) £5.8 million pound remodelling and refurbishment is complete. From a 2010 start, the completion of construction work was marked by a ‘Topping Out’ celebration in July 2012 (see photo) with the formal opening on 2013's longest day, 21st June.

The Higgins Bedford brings together an internationally renowned art collection with a brand new visitor experience of national significance, that does justice to the stories behind the people, places and collections associated with both the former museum and art gallery. The project also features a hugely expanded floorspace for exhibitions, state-of-the-art modern facilities and the latest technology to enable people of all ages to enjoy the displays.
