Bedford Western Bypass - Why in Private?
Thursday 22nd April
The commercial nature of a report to be
considered by Bedford Borough Council, looking at additional costs
identified for the completion of the first phase of the western
bypass, means it will have to be considered in private session.
The costs stem from work that took place prior
to 31st March 2009, when the contract was managed by Bedfordshire
County Council. The report includes detailed information about
claims for additional costs from the contractor. The Mayor and
Councillors will be considering these figures as well as legal
advice that will require the debate to take place after the public
session of tonight’s Executive meeting.
The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson,
“We want the details of this report to be in
the public arena, and they will be, once the costs are finalised
and a clear and accurate picture can be released. These additional
costs stem from works and events that took place under the former
County Council but we will be looking closely at how this was
allowed to come about and resisting unsubstantiated claims for
costs. Unfortunately to be able to do this we have to consider the
report in private session due to the commercial information that it
covers. We are a fully transparent council and it has only been due
to financial and legal ramifications that we have been forced to
accept a delay in this information being made available in the
The report will consider the current legal and
financial position relating to the road, which opened last
December. It is intended that a further report will be published
once the contractual position, in respect of the claims, has been
investigated and resolved.
