Making it Easier to Pay Your Council Tax

Bedford Borough Council has introduced a choice of payment dates for Direct Debit users to make paying your Council Tax even easier.

From the 1st April 2010 the following options will be available to anyone paying by Direct Debit through their bank or building society:

• 1st of the month - 10 monthly payments, normally May to February

• 7th of the month – 10 monthly payments, normally April to January

• 15th of the month – 10 monthly payments, normally April to January

• 15th of the month – 12 monthly payments, normally April to March

For anyone new to Direct Debits it is easy to switch. Direct Debit Instructions are printed on Council Tax bills or can be downloaded from the council website http://www.bedford.gov.uk/counciltax

Please click here to download the Direct Debit application form.

Alongside Direct Debits improvements have also been made for payments made at Post Offices and Payzone outlets. From the 1st April Council Tax payments can be made at any Post Office or Payzone outlet and there will be no additional transaction fee to pay. New Council Tax payment books will include a bar code which can be scanned when a payment is made.

Alternatively payments can be made anytime by debit or credit card using the Council’s 24-hour payment line, 01234 221869, or visit the council ‘Pay IT’ section on the council website to use the on line payment facility.

Cllr Michael Headley, Finance Portfolio Holder said:

“It is essential that we make it as easy as possible for people to make their Council Tax payments. That’s why we’ve introduced a package of measures that do just that. From a range of options for Direct Debit payments to the end of charges for payments made at Post Offices and Payzone outlets it is now even easier to make your payments.”
