Bumper Turn Out for First Rivercare Event of 2010

A team of willing volunteers helped to clean a stretch of the River Great Ouse on Saturday 24th April.

47 helpers, including members of Bedford Sub Aqua Diving Club and Viking Kayak Club as well as Wells Eagle IPA volunteers and other members of the public helped to clean the stretch between Kempston Mill and Queens Bridge.

66 bags of litter were collected from the river and river banks. Included amongst the items which were fished out of the water were:

  • 3 shopping trolleys
  • 2 car batteries
  • Motorbike frame
  • 3 tyres
  • 9 bicycles and 2 kids scooters
  • Gate
  • Traffic cone
  • Various pieces of metal and wire fencing

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, also pitched in to help and commented:

“The Pride in Bedford team work incredibly hard to look after Bedford and this Rivercare event is just part of their efforts to keep the borough a clean a beautiful place to enjoy.

“I am also delighted by the tremendous turn out for this, the first Rivercare event of the year. We have made this stretch of the river a lot cleaner and safer. By highlighting the rubbish that is dumped in the river we hope to make people think twice before doing it again”.
