Bedford is Miles Better

BEDFORD’S MILES BETTER’

On Saturday 26th March, Bedford Park was host to around 250 people proving that Bedford is Miles Better!

The Sports Development Unit of Bedford Borough Council held an event called Miles Better, where participants were given the chance to run or walk around the picturesque setting of Bedford Park. The event was NOT a race but an opportunity to see how fast people could ‘move’ a mile in their own time.

Miles Better attracted an array of ages and abilities. From babies being pushed round the course by Mum’s and Dad’s, young fit athletes curious to find out how long it takes them to run round the park, or to the older generation just out for a leisurely stroll. Even the Oakley Football Club turned up with around 30 children and dribbled the ball around Bedford Park as a training session!

Miles Better was very fortunate to have the Groundwork team who are supporting Cadbury’s ‘Spots v Stripes’ campaign and provided many different activities such as blindfold skittles, giant frisbee and space hopper racing. Cadbury’s ‘Spots v Strips’ is a community programme that uses playing games as a method to connect people and building stronger communities.

Everyone attending the event received a bottle of water, a certificate and a free swim voucher for Robinson Pool. The Sports Development Team also provided information to participants about how they can continue to keep an active and healthy lifestyle.

Bedford Borough Council’s Head of Leisure and Culture, Sue Drummond said, “Miles Better was a great success and we were really impressed with the number and variety of people in the community who attended. We have run three similar events in the past two years and this was the best attended. The Sports Development Unit aims to increase participation in physical activity for all members of the community and these initiatives help us to achieve this.’
