Census 2011

Local language students joined Bedford Borough Council’s Town Crier last week as he took to the streets to inform people ‘it’s not too late to complete and return their 2011 Census’.  The students, from Bedford College, read out the 2011 Census notice in a number of languages including Polish, Brazilian, and Ghanaian.

Although the initial Census deadline of 6th April has passed, individuals who have yet to complete their form still have a chance to do so before they risk receiving a £1,000 fine. Each language student read out the Census notice in their mother tongue so as to target harder to reach passers by with this message.

Martin Williams, Assistant Chief Executive, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “It’s really important that the 2011 Census reflects the needs of all the people who live in our borough, but time is running out. So if there are any individuals who haven’t already done so, we would like to remind them to please complete and return their questionnaire so that Bedford Borough Council gets the best population estimate that we can to shape a better future for our community.”

The census has been carried out in England and Wales every ten years since 1801, with the exception of 1941 and has had over 200 years experience of keeping questionnaires confidential. Personal census information is kept confidential for 100 years and is not shared with any other government departments, local councils or marketing agencies.

Anyone who is unsure of how to fill in their form, or would like extra help or guidance is welcome to come along to one of the Census completion events – bear in mind that there are just two such events left!

Census questionnaire completion events:

  • Saturday 16th April. Bedford Town Centre, outside Boots Chemist. 9am to 4pm
  • Wednesday 20th April. Putnoe Library. 2pm to 5pm
