New battery collection scheme 'charges' ahead

During March, Bedford Borough Council introduced a new battery collection service to 12,500 properties as part of ongoing efforts to increase recycling rates.

The new scheme has had a positive start - after just 3 weeks of collections the Council has collected over 220kg of batteries which could otherwise have been sent to landfill.

Paul Pace, Head of Environment, Bedford Borough Council, said “We are delighted at the positive start the new scheme has had. It shows that residents have embraced the new scheme, proving it is straightforward and easy to use. It also means we are increasing our recycling rates and cutting down on the amount sent to landfill.

“All of this puts us in a great position to roll out the scheme out to the rest of the households in the borough over the summer.”

In the meantime, residents who are awaiting the new scheme can still make use of the collection facilities in the Town Hall and Borough Hall reception areas, as well as Bedford’s Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Barkers Lane. Remember to use reusable batteries wherever possible.

To check whether your street is included in the first phase of this new service, or for more information about the kerbside battery recycling scheme, please visit our website at: www.bedford.gov.uk/recycling or alternatively contact the Recycling Team on 01234 718254 or email them at: recycling@bedford.gov.uk.
