Dame Alice Street update

On Tuesday 10th April a major roadworks scheme to significantly improve Dame Alice Street gets underway. The works are expected to last for seven weeks and are necessary to:

  • Completely replace the current signalling system which has failed 61 times in the past five years, including 9 total failures.
  • Works to significantly improve the drainage system. Which will also help to alleviate surface flooding issues
  • New cycleways to assist cyclists who wish to travel across the town centre
  • Resurface the western part of Dame Alice Street and the junction with Harpur Street

In order to safely carry out the works, it is necessary for diversions to be put in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until the scheme is finished.

A map, showing the diversion, is available below. However, it can be summarised as:

  • The western, two-way section of Dame Alice Street, will be closed 24 hours a day to eastbound traffic (heading towards the High Street and The Broadway). Traffic wishing to travel this way is asked to turn left at Union Street and continue along Tavistock Street.
  • Dame Alice Street will remain open to westbound traffic (heading towards Bromham Road and away from the town centre) throughout the works. However, lane restrictions may be in place from time to time.
  • It will be necessary to completely close Dame Alice Street in both directions on the weekend of the 26th and 27th May.

This page will be updated throughout the works. You can also keep up to date via the Council's Twitter service: www.twitter.com/bedfordtweets or if you are already a Twitter user, just search @bedfordtweets

The works are taking place now to avoid coinciding with roadworks planned for Goldington Road, St Peter's Street and the gas mains works planned for Bromham Road. The works are also scheduled to finish before the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Week 7 Update:

  • Resurfacing works at junction completed

  • Traffic lights commissioned and operating
  • Vehicle detection loops installed
  • 50% of road markings installed
  • Site layout adjusted in preparation for this weekend’s final closures to complete the road markings
