CHILD EMPLOYMENT FORTNIGHT – RAISING AWARENESS

Officers from Bedford Borough Council have been calling into shops, businesses and organisations across the Borough to raise awareness surrounding the rules of employing children. The simple message is all children need a work permit to work.

Child Employment Fortnight, which ended on 26th April, is a national campaign which aims to educate people so as to avoid, and eradicate, child exploitation.

Cllr Sue Oliver, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council, said: “It’s not illegal to employ children, so long as children are not missing their education, and they are covered by insurance, which will have set rules. Most people approached are extremely co-operative and are very keen to ensure they are doing all they can to make sure young people are accounted for and are working in a safe environment.”

If you would like further details, you can speak to a Child Employment Officer, at Bedford Borough Council, on 01234 228178.
