EXCHANGE YOUR HOME

Bedford Borough Council, in partnership with bpha and other providers of social housing in Bedford, is hosting an Exchange Your Home event on Monday 22nd April, 10am - 2pm, in the Howard Room, at the Corn Exchange. The event aims to help residents affected by reductions in the support low income families receive with their housing costs.

There are over 1,200 people renting social housing in Bedford Borough, who will potentially lose some of their housing benefit because they are deemed to have an extra room. All claimants who are deemed to have at least one spare bedroom will have their housing benefit reduced by 14% and those with two or more spare bedrooms will see their support cut by 25%.

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Executive Member for Adults Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Many working people will find themselves forced by these changes to pay higher rents simply because there aren’t enough smaller properties currently on the market. Housing association tenants wanting to move are invited to come and find out about exchanging, to look for tenants to exchange with, and to get tips and advice on attracting exchange partners. We want to help people find solutions which provide them with the best outcome.”

Tenants who are interested in finding out more can just turn up on the day. Alternatively, tenants can register their exchange with Bedfordshire House Exchange through the Bedfordshire Homefinder website via http://www.bedfordshirehomefinder.co.uk/

For those seeking more information on how the reforms will affect them, and what they should do to meet the shortfall in their rent, they can contact Bedford Borough Council’s Housing Options service on 01234 718058.
