Love Your Local Market

A week of markets will take place in Bedford town centre to mark Love Your Local Market between the 20th and 25th May.

Bedford Borough Council will be offering the opportunity for local residents and community groups to run a market stall by offering discounted rates throughout the week.

Bedford’s market history dates back 800 years when King Henry II granted the charter in 1166 which allowed Bedfordians to hold their own market. In spite of the difficult economic climate for street markets and town centres in recent years, Bedford Market has bucked the trend and has been extended to cover a larger area of the town centre.

Love Your Local Market aims to raise the profile of all town centre markets and attract new shoppers and market traders.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The market is an important part of Bedford and brings shoppers and traders into the town centre and the recent extension of our markets, despite the challenging economic climate, is proof of that.

“Love Your Local Market is an excellent way to show support for your local market and it is good news that this year we are making it even easier for local residents and community groups to also run a stall during the week.

“Our markets really help bring Bedford to life and make it a more vibrant place and I hope even more people will come out and support them this week and beyond.”

A market was held on St Paul’s Square since the 1500’s until eventually it outgrew the site and moved to the Riverside Square car park nearly 20 years ago. In February 2002 the market returned to its roots on St Paul’s Square and Harpur Square, bringing it back to the heart of Bedford town centre.

If you would like to hold a market during Love Your Local Market Week or you are interested in becoming a market trader, please contact Paul Jamieson on 01234 718676 or email markets@bedford.gov.uk
