Water butts on offer to borough residents
Residents in Bedford Borough can now get extra help to save
water and money as Bedford Borough Council has agreed a deal to
provide subsidised water butts for local residents.
Water butts are usually connected to your drainpipes and collect
water from your home, garage, greenhouse or shed which you can then
use to water your garden, reducing the need to use mains water.
The annual average rainfall in the Anglian Water region is just
600 millimetres a year, which is a third less than the rest of
England. Therefore, by using water more efficiently and reducing
waste and unnecessary use you can conserve water and save money on
Bedford Borough Council, in partnership with Straight plc, is
offering a limited number of 190 litre water butt kits for the
special price of £30 (plus £5.49 delivery charge). This is a saving
of £9.98 on the usual price.
The kit also includes a stand which enables you to fit a
watering can under the tap, a child safe lid, and handles for easy
lifting. Easy-to-follow fitting instructions are supplied with each
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Installing a
water butt is an excellent way to conserve water and save money on
“Water butts can collect the rain from your house, shed or
garage which would otherwise be lost into drains or elsewhere and
can be used to water your garden or plant pots.
“We have a limited number of water butts on offer so any
residents who would like to conserve water in the future should
place their order as soon as possible.”
The following top 6 tips can help you reduce the amount of water
you use around the home:
- Turning the tap off while brushing teeth as this can waste 10
litres of water a minute
- Wash your vegetables in a bowl, not under a running tap – use
the water to water the garden.
- Use a bucket and a sponge to wash the car, rather than a
- Fit a Save-a flush device in your toilet cistern
- Taking a shower instead of a bath (remember a power shower can
use twice as much water as a bath)
Installing a water butt in the garden. Just one can collect
5,000 litres of rainwater a year. According to Waterwise, if every
household in the UK bought a standard water butt this would save
30,000 million litres of water each summer!
