Women and Girls Sports and Leisure Festival

An all new festival dedicated to celebrating and encouraging female participation in sport and leisure activities will be taking place this month.

Bedford Borough Council is hosting the event at the Bunyan Sports Centre on Saturday 20th April. The festival is thought to be the first of its kind and it is hoped will lead to an annual event in the local sporting calendar.

The festival has been created following research carried out by Sport England that identified that only 19% of adult women in Bedford Borough participate in the recommended amount of physical activity a week.

With so much on offer in Bedford and the wider Borough, this festival will showcase exactly why taking part in regular physical activity is not only important, but also easy, affordable and enjoyable!

Councillor Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council said: “The Women & Girls’ Sports & Leisure Festival is a fantastic initiative to get more people passionate about sport and maintaining an active lifestyle. Taking part in an event such as this is a great way to meet new people, make friends, learn a new skill or simply rediscover your love of a once-favourite activity.”

There will be a number of taster sessions and demonstrations taking place throughout the day, accompanied by information displays to highlight the huge wealth of activities on offer within the Borough, which also extend to the excellent in-house facilities at the Bunyan Centre.

Other activities taking place include a bouncy castle, trampolining, golf, dance, athletics, martial arts, wheelchair basketball, roller skating sessions and fitness classes.

This is a free, family friendly event, open to women and girls of any age or ability. So whether you are an established athlete or a complete beginner, there will be something on offer for you.

Dads are welcome to attend to supervise their daughters but unfortunately they cannot participate in the activities as these are strictly for ladies only!

With free entry and no cost to participate, what are you waiting for ladies?

Put a spring in your step this April!

Time: Open between 9am and 4pm
Venue: The Bunyan Sports Centre, Mile Road, Bedford, MK42 9TS.

Coming soon…The 16th Bedford Junior Aquathlon:

Sunday 28th April will see Bedford Park and Robinson Pool come alive once more as young children from school year 3 to year 11 take part in the 16th Bedford Junior Aquathlon.

Always a popular event, the Aquathlon costs just £6 to take part, the only requirement being that participants must be confident swimmers within their age bracket.

The Aquathlon offers young people the opportunity to take part in a fun and exciting sports event. Afterwards there will also be the chance for participants’ to sign up to other races and develop their swimming and/or running ability by joining a local club.

The Aquathlon will take place alongside a senior Triathlon which is an official British Triathlon-registered event. Not only will this help to ensure that the Aquathlon organisers can make use of the expertise and staffing levels that the Triathlon will bring, it will hopefully provide the young hopefuls with some inspiration for their future sporting prowess!

Bookings for the Aquathlon are now being taken up to Monday 15th April.
