Love Your Local Market Week 2014
A week of markets is taking place in Bedford town centre to mark
Love Your Local Market until the 23rd May.
Local residents and community groups have the opportunity to run
their own market stalls throughout the week, with Bedford Borough
Council offering discounted rates to help boost interest in local
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Bedford’s market
is one of the oldest and most historic in the country, dating back
to 1166 when King Henry II granted the borough a charter to allow
Bedfordians to hold their own market.
“In recent years, Bedford Market has been extended to cover a
larger area of the town centre, despite the challenging economic
climate and remains an integral part of the town centre and Bedford
Borough, boosting town centre footfall numbers.
“We are proud to support Love Your Local Market Week once again
and offer local groups and residents the chance to hold their own
market stall in the heart of Bedford.”
Bedford’s market history dates back over 800 years when King
Henry II granted the charter in 1166 which allowed Bedfordians to
hold their own market.
A market was held on St Paul’s Square since the 1500’s until
eventually it outgrew the site and moved to the Riverside Square
car park nearly 20 years ago. In February 2002 the market returned
to its roots on St Paul’s Square and Harpur Square, bringing it
back to the heart of Bedford town centre.
