Nappy Week

IT’S NAPPY WEEK 20 – 26 April

To coincide with Nappy Week, Bedford Borough Council is encouraging people to choose real nappies and reduce rubbish.

Unlike disposable nappies, real nappies are made from material cloth which can be taken away to be cleaned then returned to be re-used.

Reports have shown that a 40% carbon saving can be made through using reusable nappies compared to using disposables - and yes that includes the washing! Going ‘real’ also has financial benefits as it costs, on average, 16p per disposable. This shows that parents can save anything from £150 to over a £1,000 over the lifetime of using nappies depending on which brand of nappies they use.

As an added incentive, the Council are offering £25 cash back for those who spend over £50 purchasing washable nappies, covers or training pants.

A Bedford Borough Council spokesperson said: “As each nappy can take more than 200 years to naturally degrade, it’s easy to see how the sheer number of disposable nappies thrown away presents serious problems to the environment, particularly when each baby could use more than 4,000 nappies before they are potty trained.”
