To coincide with Nappy Week, Bedford Borough
Council is encouraging people to choose real nappies and reduce
Unlike disposable nappies, real nappies are
made from material cloth which can be taken away to be cleaned then
returned to be re-used.
Reports have shown that a 40% carbon saving
can be made through using reusable nappies compared to using
disposables - and yes that includes the washing! Going ‘real’ also
has financial benefits as it costs, on average, 16p per disposable.
This shows that parents can save anything from £150 to over a
£1,000 over the lifetime of using nappies depending on which brand
of nappies they use.
As an added incentive, the Council are
offering £25 cash back for those who spend over £50 purchasing
washable nappies, covers or training pants.
A Bedford Borough Council spokesperson said:
“As each nappy can take more than 200 years to naturally degrade,
it’s easy to see how the sheer number of disposable nappies thrown
away presents serious problems to the environment, particularly
when each baby could use more than 4,000 nappies before they are
