Improving Communications for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

                                                                       Monday 2nd August 2010

As part of the continuing drive to improve services, Bedford Borough Council is currently conducting a review of how people who are deaf, or have a hearing impairment, prefer to communicate with the council.

Questionnaires have been sent to people who are registered with Adult Services as being deaf or hearing impaired, however the council would like to extend the consultation to those who have a hearing loss, who are not registered with its Deaf and Hearing Impairment Team.

Cllr Nicky Attenborough, Portfolio Holder for Adult Services said: “The aim of this consultation is to establish the easiest way to communicate with hard of hearing groups, whether that be face-to-face, for lip reading and sign language purposes, or through the use of more modern applications such as text services or webcams. It will be interesting to see if we have any new suggestions as to how we should communicate and we hope it will alter how we operate going forward.”

If you would like to take part in the consultation, forms can be completed on-line www.forms.bedford.gov.uk/comhl (for people with a hearing impairment) or

www.forms.bedford.gov.uk/comd (for people who are deaf).

Alternatively, if you would like a questionnaire to be sent to you, please contact Anona Hoyle on 01234 718345 or Minicom 01234 228219 or Fax 01234 276953 or email anona.hoyle@bedford.gov.uk
