Rogue Traders Beware

Thursday 12th August 2010

Bedford Borough Council Trading Standards Service is reminding Bedford Borough residents to be extra vigilant due to rogue traders operating in the area. This warning follows a spate of recent distraction burglaries throughout Bedfordshire.

Rogue traders will target people on their door step, sometimes conning people out of thousands of pounds for shoddy or unnecessary work. In other cases, teams of distraction burglars will call at a house offering to carry out work or give a convincing story to gain access to the property to take money or valuables.

‘No Cold Calling Zones’ were introduced in Bedford Borough to deter these criminal gangs and to ensure that residents remain vigilant and report unwanted cold callers.

Cllr Nick Charsley, Portfolio Holder for Rural Affairs, said: “No Cold Calling Zones send out a message to rogue traders and con-artists that people in the area are vigilant against such scams. This makes criminals think twice before attempting to con people out of their hard earned money.”

Bedford Borough Council Trading Standards Service is keen to promote reputable and reliable businesses and has an approved trader scheme where you can find a trader you can trust.

To report unwanted cold callers, please telephone Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
