Best Dressed Window competition

The competition has now closed and the results are in for the Best Dressed Window Competition.  The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, presented the award to The Art Centre & Gallery on Howard Street, in the Independent Retailer category

Keeping to a “traditional British Summer” theme, windows were decorated with giant sticks of rock and even a seaside cut out which was used to raise money for charity.

The Window Dressing Competition ran throughout the town centre and served to further improve the town’s shopping experience and to celebrate our summer in Bedford Borough.

Given the large number of businesses competing in the Independent Retailer  category and the huge number of votes cast, a runner up spot was added to the competition. This was awarded jointly to Boutique Planet and Charisma, both located in The Arcade.  Their eye catching windows highlighted the bright colours and fun of summer with different types of merchandise complimenting their window themes giving customers a reason to stop , look and be intrigued as to what’s in their stores.

Further winning awards as voted by the public went to:

Charity Store category: The ReUse Centre (located in Church Arcade) used donated goods to create well balanced windows, setting a very good example of how to combine different products to get fantastic results.

Chain Store/Franchise category: Debenhams (located on the High Street) with their display which created a real feast on the eyes and encouraged the customer to come and buy. A true snap shot of Summer.

Having carried out a mystery shopper exercise, BHS and Debenhams voted as ‘retail experts’ and awarded their first place to Boutique Planet.

Finally, the Portas Town Team also voted Michael R Peters (on The Broadway) for the ‘Most Improved’ window as the summery scene and good use of humour, created a real step change in the look of their windows.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “This contest has seen real creativity and vision from our local and national retailers, helping to display Bedford at its best and promote the town centre’s unique and varied retail offering.

“I was pleased to have the chance to congratulate the shops that participated in this project, all of whom have helped to showcase Bedford. My thanks go to all the local retailers whose ongoing efforts help make Bedford town centre an attractive place for shoppers and other visitors. We hope to run other window display workshops and competitions such as this in the future.”
