Major boost for sports facilities in Queens Park

Bedford Borough Council, in partnership with local community groups, has successfully bid for £119,000 in funding to significantly improve Allen Park in Queens Park.

The funding has been awarded today by Sport England as part of their Inspired Facilities fund. More than 1,300 local sports projects across the country have now received National Lottery Funding through Inspired Facilities, part of its Olympic and Paralympic Legacy programme.

The funding for Allen Park will deliver much needed improvements to the sports pavilion, improving the changing areas, showers and toilets as well as converting the building to provide a clubroom and ensuring the facility is accessible to people with disabilities. The recently refurbished court area will also be floodlit allowing cricket, football, tennis and basketball to be played more often.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Community and Regulatory Services, said: “This funding award is superb news and will bring real benefits to Allen Park and the Queens Park community.

“The funding will pay for a major upgrade to the sports pavilion and allow even more people to enjoy Allen Park throughout the year.”

Jill Upton, Treasurer of Bedford Ladies FC, added: “Bedford Ladies and Girls FC were delighted to be part of the winning bid to improve the facilities on the Allen Park site and we are particularly inspired that girls football will at last have a permanent home in Bedford.

“Bedford Ladies and Girls FC is the oldest and most successful all female club in the area. Bedford Ladies First Team play at Regional Premiership level and have always finished in the top four positions but with just one promotion place we hope this will inspire us to win promotion to the Combination this season. We have strong associations with the area as we train at Westfield School sports grounds and have hosted tournaments there.”

Martin Darlow, Chief Executive of Beds Cricket Ltd, added: “I am delighted with this award which is a welcome result and reward for the hard work of those who have worked on the bid. Queens Park is cricket mad and this money will go some way to meeting demand by improving facilities and increasing opportunities to play the game.”

Sport England’s Chair, Nick Bitel, added: “A year on from the Olympics, this National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in Bedford Borough.

“With investment now on offer from our Inspired Facilities Fund until 2017, we look forward to supporting many more sports clubs in the borough who play such a vital role in grassroots sport.”
