A Levels

A LEVEL RESULTS SUCCESS IN BEDFORD BOROUGH

Students across Bedford Borough are celebrating exam success, with an increase in the number of young people achieving top grades. Based on returns from the 6 (out of 7) upper schools, provisional A Level results show 43% of pupils achieved one or more A* - A grades, an improvement on last year at the same time as a widely-reported fall in the national figure.

 

Across the borough notable successes include:

 

Bedford Academy

Bedford Academy is celebrating its best ever A level results with 96% of students achieving three A levels at grades A* – E, and an overall pass rate of 100%.

Biddenham Upper School

 

·         There has been a 21% increase in the number of pupils taking A Levels in this academic year

·         100% of pupils achieved at least one A Level A* - E grade

·         89% of pupils achieved three or more A Levels A* - E grade compared to 84% in the previous academic year

 

Hastingsbury Business & Enterprise College

·         47% of pupils achieved at least one A Level A* - A grade, compared to 46% in previous academic year

·         100% of pupils achieved at least one A Level A* - E grade

·         29% of pupils achieved two or more A Level A* - A grades compared to 27% in previous academic year

·         18% of pupils achieved three or more A Level A* - A grades compared to 10% in previous academic year

·         92% of pupils achieved three or more A Levels A* - E grades, compared to 88% in previous academic year

 

2013-14 has been an impressive year for A-Level students at Hastingsbury Business and Enterprise College. With 92% of students gaining 3 or more A-Levels at A*-E (98% 2 or more) and 18% gaining 3 or more A*- A grades. This outcome is an improvement on last year’s results.

 

Some of the highlights from this year include; Rachel Botrugno who achieved 3 A Grades and has been accepted to study Dentistry at Bristol University, Henry Atkinson who achieved AAB and has been accepted to study Mathematics at Keele University and Benjamin Zanna who achieved 3 Distinction* and has accepted a place at Worchester University to study Forensic Psychology. 

 

Martin Fletcher, Head teacher at Hastingsbury Business & Enterprise College, said:  “These are the best results that the college has ever achieved. I am delighted that all the hard work of our students and staff has been rewarded by such fabulous outcomes. I wish each student the very best of luck for the future whether they are going onto university or into employment.”

 

Mark Rutherford School

·         62% of pupils achieved at least one A Level A* - A grade, up from 37% in the previous academic year

·         100% of pupils achieved at least one A Level A* - E grade

·         31% of pupils achieved two or more A Levels A* - A, compared to 20% in the previous academic year

·         100% achieved two or more A Levels A* - E grades

·         20% of pupils achieved three or more A Levels A* - A grades, up from 10% in the previous academic year

·         97% of pupils achieved three or more A Levels A* - E grades, up from 92% in the previous academic year

 

The percentage of students achieving A* - A grades was much improved on last year. Average points per candidate was also much improved from last year.

 

BTEC students also excelled with George Darlow, Billy Guinn, Sam Hall, Matthew Kumar, Jordan Parker and Dominic Stonebridge all achieving triple star Distinction grades.

 

Stephen Peacey, Principal at Mark Rutherford School, said: “Congratulations to all our students. The hard work they have put in and the support they have had from staff has ensured that they have been successful and we wish them all well for the future.”

 

Sharnbrook Upper School

·         There has been an 9% increase in the number of pupils taking A Levels in this academic year

·         17% of pupils achieved two or more A* - A grades compared to 16% in the previous academic year

 

St.Thomas More

·         56% of pupils achieved at least one A Level A* - A grade compared to 42% in previous academic year

·         100% of pupils achieved at least one A Level A* - E grade

·         21% of pupils achieved two or more A Levels A* - A grade compared to 15% in previous academic year

·         4% of pupils achieved three or more A Levels A* - A grade compared to 2% in previous academic year

 

Wootton Upper School & Arts College

  • 100% of pupils achieved at least one A Level A* - E grade
  • 89% achieved 3 or more ‘A’ Levels grade A* - E

 

Cllr Henry Vann, Portfolio Holder for Education at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Congratulations to everyone who got their results today. Pupils and teachers in Bedford Borough have bucked the national trend. Pupils and staff have worked really hard to get to this point in the year. These results really are testament to the excellent education on offer in Bedford Borough schools and the substantial amount of work put in by so many people.”

 

 

There are many options available within Bedford Borough for pupils to consider upon leaving school. Not only are there a range of A Level courses, there are also excellent vocational qualifications at local colleges, strong work-based training providers and a broad array of apprenticeships available.

There is also support available for students who are disappointed with their results. Fully qualified Careers Advisors from the Jobs Hub have been at every Upper School in Bedford Borough on results day. Alternatively, the Jobs Hub can be contacted on 01234 223510.

·         Advice about education and training options, including apprenticeships

·         Help with job skills including CV writing, job applications and interview skills

·         Access to job vacancies

·         Appointments with training providers

·         Business start-up workshops and enterprise coaching

·         Help with volunteering opportunities

·         Signposting to other services to help with specific issues, such as housing, health, benefit or debt advice

 

The Jobs Hub is funded by the Bedford Borough Partnership and Jobcentre Plus and is located at 15 Greyfriars in Bedford.
