KICK ASH: YOUNG PEOPLE PROUD TO BE SMOKEFREE

The Kick Ash project, which aims to stop young people from taking up smoking, is alive and kicking in Bedford Borough. The programme has now been running across the Borough for 12 months and is about to start its second year this September.

Kick Ash UK is a smoking prevention programme led by young people which sees pupils in Year 10 recruited to work as Kick Ash mentors to promote their 'proud to be smokefree' message. These Kick Ash mentors lead activities in their own schools and their partner primary schools.

Pupils at Sharnbrook Upper School have delivered a broad programme of events which included delivering Kick Ash sessions to surrounding schools, visiting local stores and talking to customers about Kick Ash and asking them to sign the ‘proud to be smokefree’ pledge, and designing a ‘Bedford Kick Ash Charter’ to be signed by local retailers as a means of them showing their support for Kick Ash and their commitment to no underage sales.

This September, Sharnbrook Upper School will be on-board again for their second year and will be joined by Hastingsbury Business and Enterprise College.

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Executive Member for Adults’ Services and Community Wellbeing at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Kick Ash is all about empowerment; it is led by young people for young people. We are very proud of their efforts and we’re delighted with the example they are showing to others. Kick Ash ambassadors work with our Trading Standards team, visiting local retailers to talk to them about Kick Ash and help eliminate underage sales of tobacco. Hopefully this campaign can stop young people from taking up this life-limiting habit.”
