PLANS FOR £3.5 MILLION UPGRADE OF OLDER PEOPLE’S HOMES

Bedford Borough Council has released plans for a £3.5 million upgrade of its residential homes for older people.  Residents of the homes, which were under the management of BUPA until they were brought back ‘in house’ last year, will benefit from a range of improvements and enhancements including:

·         New wet rooms and shower rooms in place of redundant bathrooms

·         An additional lift in every home to eliminate the problems caused by a sole lift failing

·         Improved wash room facilities

·         New furniture for individual rooms, in direct response to feedback from residents and their families

·         New sanitary ware

·         New boilers where required

The enhancements are coming about following an extensive consultation with residents and their families, so that the upgraded homes will best meet the needs of the people living in them.

Cllr Mohammad Yasin, Portfolio Holder for Adults’ Services at Bedford Borough Council said: “This investment will transform these buildings which provide homes for some of our oldest residents. We’ve listened to what residents have had to say and put in place the improvements they want made. For instance a key theme throughout the consultation was to have somewhere to “make mum a cup of tea” so we’ve incorporated this in the plans to make the homes fit for the needs of its residents.”

The homes were originally built back in the 1960’s and 1970’s and are located at:

Highfield, on Avon Drive in Brickhill

Puttenhoe, Putnoe Street in Putnoe

Southway, London Road, Bedford

Parkside, Bedford Road, Kempston

Rivermead, Halsey Road, Kempston

It’s proposed that work will start this year and progress through to 2018, with the improvements set to be in place for years to come.
