GCSE Results



Year 11 pupils achieved good examination results this year. Overall provisional results for 5 A*-C GCSE’s (including English and Mathematics) for Bedford Borough Schools is 52%.


Cllr Henry Vann, Portfolio Holder for Education at Bedford Borough Council, said:  “Congratulations to all pupils who received their results on Thursday 20 August, it is clear that they have worked very hard and there are some outstanding performances.


“The overall borough results remain similar to this time last year, in-line with the early national indications.


“Structural changes will take place in the near future across the borough and it is important to continue build on our excellent progress at Key Stage 2 and A Level. The local investment in support for English and Maths at Key stage 4 has begun to make a difference in the schools where it has been operating and will continue to do so over the coming years.”


Bedford Academy

40% of students gained 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths.


Bedford Free School

57% of students achieved 5A*- C including English and Maths.


Biddenham - International School & Sports College

35% of students achieved 5A*- C including English and Maths.

David Bailey, Head teacher at Biddenham International School & Sports College said: “Once again Biddenham has produced outstanding results particularly at the top end this year with a large number achieving A*’s and A’s. We are incredibly proud of our students and congratulate them on another year of outstanding performance. They should be congratulated on their success from all quarters.”

Hastingsbury Business and Enterprise College

44% of students gained 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths.


Martin Fletcher, Head teacher at Hastingsbury Business and Enterprise College stated: “Hastingsbury results this year were the best they have been for a number of years with significant improvements on last year. 44% of the Year group achieved 5 or more A* - C grades including English and Mathematics with 60% achieving A*- C in English and 55% in Mathematics. Close to 70% of students made expected levels of progress in English and Mathematics between the ages of 11 and 16 with 30% of the Year group making better than expected progress in English.”


Martin continued: “I am delighted with the achievement of Hastingsbury students this year across the age and ability range. Our GCSE results today build upon the outstanding results that our Sixth Form achieved last week. I am so proud that the hard work and application of both students and staff has been rewarded by some excellent outcomes and am certain that our decision to convert to an academy next term will act as an impetus for yet further improvement. I wish all of our students great success with the next stage of their education and look forward to the vast majority returning in a few week’s time to start courses in our Sixth Form.”


Achievements of particular note were: Amber Morris with outstanding results including 9 A* / A grades. Niamh Hutchings and Jeandy Mibanzo with excellent outcomes including 7 A*/A grades.


Mark Rutherford School

43% of students gained 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths.


Richard Millard, Head teacher at Mark Rutherford School said: “Congratulations to all our students on achieving some excellent results. We are particularly pleased to see an improvement in some key performance indicators such as value added and the new progress 8 measures.”

Sharnbrook Upper School & Community College

73% of students achieved 5 or more A* - C GCSEs including English and Maths.


St. Thomas More

54% of students gained 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths.


Alison Wilshaw-Quinn, Head teacher at St. Thomas More, said: “We are extremely pleased with our 3% rise in 5A*-C incl English and Maths.  82% A*-C was achieved by the English Dept, which in a climate of exam turmoil is amazing.  Average point scores for individuals and exam entries have all risen, and 3 and 4 levels of progress are showing an increase on last year's results again both in English and Maths. Many students have quite simply performed excellently which means they have more than secured their A Level choices.”
