Summer Reading Challenge

Beat the summer boredom and help make a Summer Reading Challenge record!

Are your children starting to run out of summer holiday steam? Beat the summer holiday boredom by encouraging your children to join the library and take part in the free Summer Reading Challenge!

In Bedford, over 2540 children have already signed up to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge but there is still plenty of time to join in!

To take part, young people just need to pop in to their nearest Bedford Borough Library (Bedford Central, Bromham, Kempston, Putnoe, Wootton or the Mobile Library) and sign up!

When Children join Record Breakers they will be given a poster packed with lots of Guinness World Record facts.

Read 6 library books to collect a Record Breakers certificate

Read 12 library books to get a Record Breakers Zip Tag

Read 18 library books to get a gold Record Breakers Medal

There are also lots of other free activities running in libraries over the summer holidays, which include record breaking mini challenges, Lego Club and a wide variety of crafts.  For more information about what is going, take a look at the libraries website here.

Councillor Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said “The Summer Reading Challenges are a great way to encourage children and young children to enjoy reading! With a record breaking attempt underway in Bedford, there has never been a more exciting time to get involved!”

Don’t forget – there is still time to join the imagiNation Read Me! Reading Challenge aimed at 11 – 18 year olds.  Young people are asked to read 2 library books for this challenge and be inspired to create art based on what they have read.

For more information on all the summer activities underway, please visit our Leisure and Culture section.
