The Cage

NATIONS UNITE AT ‘THE CAGE’

Community Football shows Bedford’s diversity at its best

A free to attend, 5-a-side football session takes place every Tuesday, from 6pm - 7pm, at ‘The Cage’ at The Salvation Army on Commercial Road, Bedford.  The #JustTurnUp programme, delivered by the Borough Borough Council via Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund project, always welcomes new members. The aim of the session is to create an opportunity for local people from a range of ethnic backgrounds to take part in sport within their own community.

Nationalities represented at this football session include players from the U.K, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Eretria, Poland, Romania, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, America, Italy and Nigeria.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Players integrate brilliantly - the international language of football has flowed. In particular, physical activity is central to the quality of life of young people, as a key source of friendship, networks and self-identity, especially in the absence of work, full-time education or family responsibilities.”

Muhammad, who lives on Commercial Road, just a few doors down from the ‘cage’, said: “It’s great to be able to come and play with friends in an organised game in this area. We were always getting told off for playing in the streets before.”

In attempting to address issues of community regeneration and social inclusion, taking part in sport has been shown to break down barriers between communities and is crucial to the health and wellbeing of local people. The #JustTurnUp programme has been designed to offer affordable and flexible opportunities for people to become more active.

Bedford Borough Council would like to outline that The Salvation Army have been instrumental in supporting this community and they have been working closely with the #JustTurnUp team to bring sport to this urban area.

The #JustTurnUp programme is continuing to work towards developing physical activity in the community and providing all citizens with equal opportunities for participation. Football sessions are by no means the only #JustTurnUp offering within the borough. Zumba, Cross Fit, Tennis, Badminton, Boxing, Cricket, Basketball, Skating, Netball and more sessions are also available.
