GCSE 2017

GCSE RESULTS FOR THE 2016/17 ACADEMIC YEAR

Provisional GCSE results for the 2016/17 academic year have been released today by the Department for Education (DfE).

This is the first full year of the revised GCSEs (with less emphasis on course work); it is not possible, at this stage, to directly compare the new grade scale or undertake meaningful interpretation.  The revised GCSEs for some subjects (English, English Literature and maths) use a new grading system using numbers from the highest grade 9 to the lowest grade 1 (with other subjects being reformed over the next two years).

The new numerical system also have two different types of pass grade - with grade 4 a "standard" pass and grade 5 a "strong" pass.

Headline figures for Bedford Borough are as follows:

·         62.24% of Bedford Borough students reaching the required standard in English and mathematics at Grade 4 and above (standard pass).

·         37.87% of Bedford Borough students reaching the required standard in English and mathematics at Grade 5 and above (strong pass).

·         Average Attainment 8 Score was 46.04 across Bedford Borough (Attainment 8 is the average score obtained by a student for their best 8 GCSE results).

Cllr Henry Vann, Portfolio Holder for Education at Bedford Borough Council, said: "Congratulations to all those students who worked so hard to achieve these results and a huge thank you to the teachers, parents, carers, families and whole school communities who supported them to achieve. While these figures are not comparable to previous years, I look forward to seeing them in the context of the national picture.”
