Bedford Sports Awards
The biggest gathering of Bedford sports people
that has ever taken place was held at the Bedford Corn Exchange on
Monday 12th December.
The annual Bedford Sports Awards, which is
organised by the Borough Council Sports Development Team, hosted
over 350 guests. The purpose of the event was to recognise the many
achievements and contributions that local people make to sport.
There were 11 different award categories and
organisers received a near record number of nominations from clubs,
schools and individuals from across the borough.
The audience heard all about the diverse range
of sporting talent in Bedford such as an 83 year old marathon
runner, a junior world Thai Boxing champion, an under 16 power boat
champion, a volunteer who has worked tirelessly over the last 50
years plus many more.
Guest speakers on the night included Bedford’s
Olympic medal winners Tim Foster and Gail Emms, with a closing
address from Mayor Dave Hodgson. The audience were also treated to
a special video message from Paula Radcliffe.
Cllr Doug McMurdo, portfolio holder for
Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Bedford has
a vast range of sporting facilities to be proud of and I am
delighted that we encourage and maintain such a high level of
sporting talent in and around our communities. The recognition of
volunteers who have given a lifetime to sport, as well as
international performers, was fantastic.”
