Consumers Urged to be Aware of their Rights

CONSUMERS URGED TO BE AWARE OF THEIR RIGHTS

Trading Standards at Bedford Borough Council are urging motorists to be aware of their consumer rights when buying used vehicles as part of a national campaign by the Office of Fair Trading.

One of the most frequent complaints received by Trading Standards concerns the used car industry. Many motorists are not aware of the rights they have and so the Office of Fair Trading has launched a campaign to make the public aware of what they are entitled to when buying a second hand vehicle.

Vehicles should be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described in the advertisement. If a car doesn’t meet any of these standards it is classed as faulty and customers will have the right to a repair, replacement or refund. Consumers who purchase a vehicle from a trader over the phone or online are also entitled to a seven day ‘cooling off’ period. This gives customers seven working days after the vehicle has been delivered to cancel an order for any reason and to receive a refund.

Buying from private sellers grants fewer rights for the customer but the vehicle should still match the description given by the seller who must have the legal right to sell.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Community and Regulatory Services said: “One of the main complaints to Trading Standards is to do with second hand cars. Far too often hard working people have paid a significant amount of money for something that is not road worthy and find themselves out of pocket as they are not aware of their rights as buyers. I urge anyone looking to buy a second hand car to call Consumer Direct or visit their website to find out what they are entitled to when buying a second hand vehicle.”
