No Second Night

NO SECOND NIGHT OUT

In the past week, Bedford Borough Council has conducted its annual Rough Sleeper Evaluation in partnership with a wide-range of organisations who work with socially excluded people in Bedford.  A total of 19 people were found to have slept rough on a typical night.

It was discovered that the number of East European nationals rough sleeping has fallen significantly, following specific partnership work between Bedford Borough Council and a number of voluntary sector agencies including the Polish British Integration Centre.

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Executive Member for Adults Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “It’s important the Council knows who is sleeping rough in Bedford Borough so we can make sure they are aware of the full range of services that are available to them. We want to reach every individual who sleeps rough and we are working closely with a range of partners to meet their needs.”

Mindful of the onset of the cold weather, Bedford Borough Council works in partnership with the Salvation Army to provide a night café which offers a warm, safe environment for those who would otherwise face a night on the streets when the overnight temperatures drop to zero or below.

The Council is currently consulting on its Supporting People Strategy which includes developing complex needs supported housing by April 2014. This provision will meet the identified needs of long-term rough sleepers so they can access good quality housing which will give them a platform to gain more independence.
