Troubled Families

BEDFORD BOROUGH’S TROUBLED FAMILIES SUCCESS SECURES FURTHER FUNDING

Central Government has confirmed that Bedford Borough Council is a top performer in terms of delivering positive outcomes through the Troubled Families programme. As a result, the Council has secured further funding to continue the programme’s second phase.

The Troubled Families programme aims to support families that have multiple high cost problems such as; adults out of work, parents, young people and children with a range of health problems, children and young people who are not attending school, parents and children involved in or victims of anti-social behaviour, and families affected by domestic violence and abuse.

In June 2013, Central Government announced its intention to extend the Troubled Families Programme for a further five years (2015 – 2020). In the 2014 Budget the government announced – on the back of strong performance - that the highest performing areas would have the opportunity to get started on the expanded ‘early starter’ programme, during 2014/15.

Cllr Sue Oliver, Executive Member for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council said: “Reaching the eligibility threshold which we set for being an early starter area is a great achievement and reflects really well on colleagues who have worked so hard with families as well as all those who have provided the local co-ordiniation, analysis and project management.

It has been estimated that a further 840 families in Bedford Borough will be eligible for inclusion in the 5 year expanded programme.”

Bedford Borough Council will ensure it fulfills its commitment to turn around the lives of all 72 remaining families in the borough within the current programme by May 2015.

Nationally, the government's Troubled Families programme has now helped turn around the lives of over 85,000 of the hardest to help households.
