NO-ONE NEED SLEEP ROUGH IN BEDFORD BOROUGH

Following a review of homelessness in the borough, Bedford Borough Council has produced a draft Homelessness Strategy for the period 2015 – 2020.

The draft strategy is now available for public consultation.

The Council continues to work with many partners to prevent individuals and households from becoming homeless and provides support and advice for those who are. The strategy sets out how identified objectives will be achieved, and covers three themes:

  1. Prevention – The prevention of homelessness.
  2. Support – The provision of effective support to people who are homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless.
  3. Supply – To ensure that there is sufficient supply of accommodation for those at risk of homelessness and those who are homeless.

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Portfolio Holder Community and Regulatory services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “We work all year round to help those at risk from homelessness access the services they need. No-one need sleep rough in Bedford Borough as there are a wide range of services that can assist individuals and families.”

Our top priority is preventing homelessness and this refreshed strategy builds on the existing plan. It identifies where there is potential for some services to be improved and provides a comprehensive action plan to achieve these objectives.”

Cllr Mohammad Yasin, Portfolio Holder for Adults’ Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “We will do everything in our power to ease homelessness. It’s crucial that we gather public opinion on such matters. By working together, we hope to form the very best approach.”
