Housing Benefit

BEEN A CHANGE AT HOME? Don’t forget to tell us!

Bedford Borough Council is reminding residents claiming Housing Benefit to keep their details up-to-date and get in touch if any of their details change.

Changes at work, such as decreased or increased working hours or a change in circumstances at home may mean the amount of benefit you are entitled to has changed. Not getting in touch may mean residents miss out on payments they are entitled to and which cannot be back-dated.

Councillor Michael Headley, Portfolio Holder for Finance at Bedford Borough Council, said: “If things change at work or at home it’s always best for residents to tell us as soon as they can. Small changes can mean a change in housing benefit payments, so the more up-to-date our information is, the better the chances are of residents receiving the right support.”

Here are some of the changes in benefit that residents should contact us about:

• A partner, grown up child, other relative or friend moves into or out of your home

• You have a pay rise or a pay cut, or the amount of money you have coming in changes

• The number of hours you work each week increases or decreases.

• You or anyone living with you changes jobs

• You start to get a Pension, or the amount you are paid changes

• You are lucky enough to receive an inheritance or a lump sum

• Your rent goes up or down

• You move home

Failing to update your details and consequently receiving overpayments is a misuse of the benefits system and may result in action being taken against claimants to recover costs.

To inform us about any changes to your circumstances, please visit www.bedford.gov.uk/housingbenefits or call us on 01234 718 097.
