Keeping Baby Safe

Becoming a parent can be joyful, exciting, life changing…but it can also be slightly confusing and worrying, and the weight of responsibility can feel tremendous…

…Luckily, Luton and Bedfordshire Local Safeguarding Children Boards have joined forces to produce a clear and comprehensive booklet, ‘A Guide to Help You Keep Your Baby Safe’, which is aimed at parents and carers of children aged 0-2 years-old.

The booklet gives advice on subjects including: sleep, crying, post natal depression, home safety, weaning, transporting your child safely and much more. Written by local experts – including nurses and health visitors – the booklet aims to give parents the clear, trustworthy, locally relevant information they want, along with details of how to contact helpful groups and services when necessary.

The respective Portfolio Holders for Children’s Services, Cllr David Sawyer, at Bedford Borough Council and Cllr Anita Lewis at Central Bedfordshire Council said: “Having a child is very rewarding, but it can also be stressful and demanding. The aim of this booklet is to help parents enjoy the early period of their son’s/daughter’s life as much as possible, providing them with peace of mind by means of providing clear information at their fingertips. Whatever a new parent’s concerns, we want them to be able to get definite and concise answers.”

In the coming months there will be a ‘Keeping Baby Safe’ stall set up in the High Street in Bedford, for people to visit and have a chat with health professionals – and to also take home some freebies such as, ‘Keeping Baby Safe’ stickers, door stoppers, draw-string bags, balloons and thermometers.

Copies of the booklet will be distributed to local parents and carers through health visitors, and midwives (as new parents are discharged from hospital). Booklets will also be available within Children’s Centres.
