Sleeping Rough May Prove Tough

On the night of Friday 26th February, John Morris, Head of Housing Services and Mike Milner, Rough Sleepers Co-ordinator, at Bedford Borough Council are helping to raise money for the homeless in Bedford, by sleeping out on a sponsored sleep out organised by The King’s Arms Project (KAP).

The King’s Arms Project runs a Rough Sleepers Outreach Service in Bedford, which was originally created in February 2008. The Outreach Service supports long-term and entrenched rough sleepers to help them break free from the streets, and to get support.

John Morris commented: “It will be tough to even partly experience that of being a rough sleeper, just for one single night, but I am delighted to be supporting the King’s Arms Project and to help grab people’s attention and contribute to the cause. They say you can never fully understand a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes. It’s very possible that I will remember this night for the rest of my life, because it will be so extremely different to my usual lifestyle. Mike and I are gaining some comfort from news that apparently it doesn’t look like it’s going to snow that night!”

The King’s Arms Project (KAP) in Bedford is a homelessness charity offering support to residents and to rough sleepers, many of whom have multiple and complex needs, dealing with life issues such as mental health, drug and alcohol addictions, self-harm, eating disorders and depression.

Cllr Colleen Atkins, Housing & Planning portfolio holder at Bedford Borough Council said: “Being homeless is no fun, particularly at this time of year. It’s really important that the homeless people who have to experience this way of life night after night, have the necessary support by way of shelter, food and counselling. Although the number of rough sleepers living in Bedford has dropped this year, the council’s aim is to reduce this further. I am working closely with Council officers and relevant agencies to try to improve the situation. I congratulate John and Mike for taking part in the sleep out, to draw attention to the needs of homeless people.”

The KAP has been doing some fantastic work over the last 21 years, literally helping to transform people’s lives.  This has been recognised nationally and helped Bedford Borough Council to be awarded the Government’s ‘Rough Sleeping Champions’ status in 2009.

If you would like to sponsor Mike or John, please send an email to: housingadvice@bedford.gov.uk  inserting the words sponsored sleep-out 2010 in the subject box and stating how much you would like to pledge.
