Closure of Howbury Street

Howbury Street in Bedford, between Castle Road and Goldington Road has been closed after resurfacing work uncovered several large voids below the tarmac surface.

The closure is in effect 24 hours a day and will continue until further notice.

During the planned highway repairs earlier today (Wednesday 2nd February), four holes were found immediately underneath the top level of tarmac. Some of these holes were up to four metres long and over a metre deep and are suspected to have been caused by collapsed sewers.

The Council’s first priority is always the safety of local residents and therefore, the Council has been left with no option but to close the road until it can be repaired and made safe again.

Investigations are now being carried out, in conjunction with Anglian Water, to ascertain the cause for these voids. Once this work has been carried out, repairs can be made and the road repaired and reopened.

The Council has delivered letters to local residents to inform them of the situation and signs have been erected.

The Bedford Borough Council Highways Helpdesk number is 01234 228661.
