Success for the first Green Borough Fair

The first ever ‘Green Borough Fair’ was held on Sunday 6th February at St Mark’s Church Community Centre in Brickhill. Scores of residents turned up to the event helping to make it’s a great success..

The Fair provided a great opportunity for groups to network and share their knowledge about all things green with those who live or work in the borough. Experienced ‘In Bloom’ volunteers and representatives of ‘Sustainable Bedford’ projects offered advice to people on how to start their own local environmental improvement initiatives. It also provided individual residents with helpful hints and tips to save money by adopting a more eco friendly, sustainable lifestyle.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough Dave Hodgson, who attended the event, commented: “I was extremely pleased to see residents out at the Green Borough Fair eager to help make a difference.  Bedford Borough Council is committed to creating a greener borough by investing in schemes to reduce CO2 emissions and we have set ourselves the target of reducing our own emission by 40% by 2015 . The Mayor's Climate Fund has been an amazing success, with funding given to community groups across the Borough for places such as village halls, community centres and schools. This event is a part of our commitment to work with the community to benefit the environment, save money and help combat climate change

A charity raffle was also held on the day for the Golden Days Garden Project, which managed to raise £77 for the group. The Golden Days Garden Project is a group of volunteers who are working together to transform the open space around the Goldington Day Care Centre into a garden that can be enjoyed by the elderly people who visit the centre. The group currently consists of local In Bloom supporters and staff members of the day care centre; however they are always on the look out for more volunteers. If you would like to get involved please call Jacky Fraser on 01234 221749.
