Grit from India

Bedford Borough Council and its Highways Maintenance contractors Amey, have taken delivery of a further 1,300 tonnes of grit imported from India, as work continues to protect our roads from ice and keep the borough moving during the winter months.

The move follows the Council’s successful move last summer 2010 to overcome a national shortage of salt when it purchased 3,000 tonnes of grit from a supply it located in Sweden. That ensured the Council went into this harsh winter with double the previous maximum salt stock for Bedford Borough

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “This year we increased gritting on roads and public areas in Bedford Borough, even while other Councils were forced to reduce gritting runs by only covering main routes.

“We were successful in overcoming the national shortage last year, and are once again refusing to take ‘there’s no grit’ for an answer. We will continue to search high and low to bring in the grit, with this new delivery of 1,300 tons from India helping us to keep the Borough moving throughout the winter and help residents stay safe on the roads.'

“The reduced gritting runs in other areas due to salt shortages caused problems on roads elsewhere and had the effect of disrupting refuse collections, for example, with lorries were unable to access snow covered roads.  We were able to avoid the scenes witnessed elsewhere and are absolutely determined to continue to minimise disruption for Borough residents, whatever the weather.”
