Sensory Impairment Conference

In a joint initiative between Bedford College and Bedford Borough Council, a conference is to be held at Bedford College which will bring residents with sensory impairment (individuals who are Blind, Deaf, hearing impaired or sight impaired) together to meet those who provide local services.

The conference is part of ongoing partnership work, with the idea to create a shared understanding between all parties, giving the people of Bedford the chance to discuss with the Council, the College, and other local service providers, how services could be improved for those with sensory impairment.

Cllr Nicky Attenborough, portfolio holder for Adults Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “This will be an invaluable conference, it will allow the generation of ideas on how we can make the lives of those with sensory impairments better, and who better to tell us than those with sensory impairments themselves! Our aim is to provide services that help people with sensory impairments to live fulfilling and independent lives. If we discover what can be done differently, in order to make services even better, it will be extremely beneficial.”

Katrina O’Brien, Assistant Director – Foundation and Additional Support at Bedford College, explained:

“We are delighted to be working with Bedford Borough Council and other service providers to ensure that those with sensory impairment are able to access services including education.  This is part of our ongoing commitment to provide an inclusive and safe learning environment at Bedford College with a range of specialist services including Deaf Support Services (a specialist team offering deaf students mentoring and support), a Facebook site for the Bedford College Deaf Community and DeafWatch (a fire alarm for those who cannot hear traditional fire alarms).”

Please note, if you would like to attend this event you will need to book in advance and state your communication needs (British Sign Language (BSL), large print, Braille etc).
