More action to reduce impact of climate change in Bedford Borough

Bedford Borough Council has confirmed ambitious plans to minimise the effects of Climate Change until 2016.

The new Climate Change Strategy sets out the Council’s aim of influencing and empowering residents, community groups, schools and businesses in the Borough to help them to reduce the impact of climate change by reducing their carbon emissions as well as introducing carbon reduction projects to reduce the carbon emissions of its own buildings.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Since the previous Climate Change Strategy was published the Council has taken real steps to reduce its own carbon emissions and to encourage the residents of the Borough to do the same.

“The hydro electric power plant is up and running, generating renewable electricity. We have received national recognition for the evaporative cooling technology installed at Borough Hall and we are also assisting schools to enable them to make reductions on energy and water bills. The Council was also one of the first in the country to sign up to the Climate Local initiative.

“Finally, we are continuing the pioneering Climate Change Fund which provides match funding to community groups for projects which will reduce their carbon emissions. This is part of our wider commitment to empowering local residents, community groups, schools and businesses to reduce their impact on the environment as well.”

The new Climate Change Strategy reviews the progress made by the Council to date to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change, whilst also providing a framework for action over the next four years. As a signatory of the new Climate Local initiative, a suite of local commitments and actions are also being developed that the Council will work towards, to mitigate and adapt to climate change, demonstrating our commitment to addressing climate change and to challenge ourselves to build on our achievements so far.
