HEART-WARMING PROJECT – PUTNOE LIBRARY KNITTERS HELP PREMATURE BABIES

Putnoe Library’s ‘Knit and Natter’ group seem to have done more knitting than nattering recently, as they have produced a large number of woolly hats for the charity ‘Knit for Peace’ to distribute to premature babies.

Dame Hilary Blume, Director at Knit for Peace, said: “It’s just great that these hats could go out to premature babies at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. It’s very cheering for both parents, and staff, to see the babies in such nice knitted hats, they make a real difference to those who receive them.”

The 'Knit and Natter' group meet at the library fortnightly, and this week, they decided to hold an event which welcomed children to come and learn to knit alongside them.

Plenty of young knitters visited the library and were inspired to become knitters of the future as they busied themselves with the task in hand. Both teachers and pupils from the half-term event plan to repeat the knitting class in the Easter holidays.

Cllr Doug McMurdo Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said: “This was a win-win event. It enabled children to learn the traditional art of knitting while they enjoyed themselves, and the items produced by the adults will directly benefit premature babies during the cold weather; a truly heart-warming event for everyone involved.”
