Bedford Borough Council Supports LGBT History Month

Bedford Borough Council is showing its support for the LGBT community this week as part of the wider LGBT History Month. To show solidarity with the community, the council will fly the rainbow flag from Bedford Borough Hall on Monday 2nd February. LGBT History Month is an opportunity for us all to learn more about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Britain, and celebrate their lives and achievements.

Mayor of Bedford Dave Hodgson said “The Rainbow Flag flying at Borough Hall is a small but important symbol of our commitment to equal rights, and I hope it sends a clear message of support and solidarity with LGBT residents living in Bedford.

In the week of Holocaust Memorial Day we are reminded in the most powerful way of the dangers of bigotry and prejudice in all its forms and it is fitting that we should be making this public statement of our commitment to equality and inclusion in our community.”

The Bedford Borough Council Community Engagement team has established good working relationships with members of the local LGBT communities, but we are always looking to establish more. We can be contacted on 01234 276 204 or by email at jo.tester@bedford.gov.uk. The Bedford Borough Council website has lots of useful information that can be found at www.bedford.gov.uk/lgbt
