Footfall is Up

BEDFORD TOWN CENTRE VISITOR BOOST

Bedford town centre once again bucked the national trend with 2015 seeing a 2 percent increase in town centre footfall.

The figures are taken from official statistics (Springboard) collected across the country.

In contrast to national and regional figures for High Streets, which saw footfall numbers fall by 2 percent, Bedford’s increase shows that people are choosing the town centre and supporting their local shops and businesses.  2015 was a bumper year with many new, quality independent businesses also choosing Bedford as their home including Seventh Heaven, Gallones , Animal Gallery, Herd, Lost & Found, Smoke Shack, George James Bridal boutique, Pride Kitchens, Épanoui, Délices, GCH Fishmongers, Rogans Books to name a few.

Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson: “Bedford is clearly bucking the national trend, with another significant rise in footfall following on from increases last year. These figures show that more people are choosing to visit and enjoy Bedford town centre even at a time when footfall is declining elsewhere around the country.”

“With extended free parking available in our car parks and a vibrant mix of independent shops, well-known chain stores, cafes and restaurants, Bedford really does have something for everyone.”

2015 saw the opening of the new bus station and the completion of major regeneration of that area. This year we are seeing huge progress with the new Riverside development. With its mix of restaurants, new public space, and the return of town centre cinema, this promises to help Bedford continue to buck the trend.”
