Early Years Funding

Following a national directive from Central Government for a ‘single funding formula’ to be established for early years education, Bedford Borough Council has approved a new, simple and transparent funding mechanism to take effect from April 2011. It will see funds allocated across all early years establishments on a consistent basis, linked to the number of children attending.  As part of the approved plans, the Council is allocating £270,000 of transition funding to support the Borough’s three nursery schools.  The Council is committed to providing the same level of early years funding for 2011/12 as in the current year.

The approval of the new funding formula follows consultation and the endorsement of the plans by the Bedford Borough Schools Forum.

Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for Children’s Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “The new formula has been developed after careful consideration and consultation in response to the Government’s directive that a single formula for early years funding must be introduced. We have put in place transitional funding to support nursery schools in the move to the new arrangements, and are supporting nursery schools with information and advice to help them realign their budgets to fit the new formula.”
