Stay 'Safe at Home'

In a bid to reduce accidental hospital admissions for children under 5 years of age, Bedford Borough Council’s ‘Safe at Home Scheme’ is currently available.  Through the scheme, families on low incomes, or parents who are unemployed, can gain advice and receive FREE safety equipment.

Bedford Borough Council is working in conjunction with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the Department of Education (DoE), along with the support of the Fire and Rescue Service, to promote the scheme which is due to end on 31st March 2011.

The council would like to remind people to come forward and benefit from what ‘Safe at Home’ has to offer. The necessary equipment is installed in the families’ homes by the Fire and Rescue Service.

To receive equipment, parent(s) have to be either unemployed or on a very low income and have a child/children under 5 years of age. The equipment available includes such items as safety gates, window restrictors, kitchen cupboard locks, and smoke alarms.

Over 172 families have received equipment via this scheme since February 2010 and the council is keen to ensure that more families receive this support.

Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for Children’s Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Under this scheme there are no costs to parents for installing this safety equipment. However, the cost of not taking advantage of this scheme could be a serious accident. It’s best to have this equipment in place.”

All Children’s Centres across the borough host staff trained to deliver support/advice regarding this scheme.
