What to do if your home is flooding:

  • If you believe that your personal safety is at risk from a flood, or the inside of your property is about to be flooded, then please call the Fire & Rescue Service via 999
  • Continue to listen to situation updates on your local radio and via Floodline 0845 988 1188
  • Keep dry and out of floodwater if possible
  • Stay in your property, if safe to do so, until the emergency services tell you to do otherwise or the floodwater has receded
  • If it is necessary to walk through shallow floodwater, take care for hidden holes, obstacles or other hazards
  • Avoid contact with floodwater and wash exposed parts before handling food or attending to wounds
  • If possible, move electrical equipment and furniture upstairs
  • For more detailed information on what to do if your home is flooding, visit the Environment Agency website, listen to this message (6.7MB) from the Environment Agency or read the practical advice on what to do to protect yourself and your property.
  • Further information is also available from the Bedfordshire and Luton Local Resilience Forum.

What Bedford Borough Council will do:

If you believe that your personal safety is at risk from a flood, or the inside of your property is about to be flooded then call the Fire & Rescue Service via 999. The emergency services will then contact Bedford Borough Council, who will assess the situation and if necessary provide Emergency Assistance Centres, transport and extra assistance to the vulnerable.
