New Drop In Service
New Drop-In Service for People Who Are Deaf
Bedford Borough Council is supporting the launch of a new
drop-in service for people who are deaf. The service will be
available at the POhWER offices in Mill Street, Bedford, and will
offer individuals advice on ways to remove the barriers of
communication that make accessing support difficult for the deaf
This service will run over a three month trial
period, from January to March 2013. The information gained from
this pilot will feed into plans that will assist the deaf community
going forward, which, if they prove valuable to this group, could
mean that the drop-in sessions continue.
The drop-in events will host British Sign
Language (BSL) interpreters who will be able to aid communication
between POhWER’s advocates and deaf people whose first language is
British Sign Language (BSL).
Cllr Colleen Atkins, Executive Member for
Adults Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Following
engagement with the local deaf community, we realised we need to
provide specialist advocacy sessions for people who are deaf.”
Starting on Monday 7 January 2013, the drop-in
service will be held on the first Monday of every month from 10am -
1pm and the third Tuesday of every month from 1pm - 4pm.
