Floods

Recent Wet Weather Alerts Bedford Borough to Get Prepared

This week, the Environment Agency issued a flood alert for rivers in the Bedford Borough river catchment. Flood alerts indicate that flooding is possible and to encourage everyone to be prepared should a flood occur. The next stage, a flood warning means that flooding is expected and immediate action needs to be taken in areas affected.

As well as urging residents and business to look at how they can get prepared, the flood alert meant the Council put its Flood Response Team on standby to react to any emerging flood issues. The Council is in regular contact with established local Community Flood Champions in areas prone to flooding like Riseley, Odell and other key contacts in the community.

The Council also works with the Environment Agency and other local partners across the Local Resilience Forum to make sure there is a joined up approach to tackle flooding.  The Environment Agency has up to date information available on its webpages regarding river and sea levels which can be found at http://apps.environment-agency.gov.uk/river-and-sea-levels/default.aspx

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The flooding that has been experienced in the North during December has clearly been devastating and has had a huge impact on local communities.

“Given the locality of the Borough with the River Great Ouse, we have flood management plans, procedures and teams in place to react should the need arise.  This includes working closely with partners like the Environment Agency and Emergency services on the local resilience forum.  However it is important that everyone is aware of what they can do to protect themselves and their homes from the devastation a flood can cause.”

The Council is calling on residents to look at what action can be taken before and during a flood. You can find local information on the latest situation on the Council’s website

www.bedford.gov.uk/environment_and_planning/emergencies/flooding_updates.aspx

As well as details of any flood warnings or alerts in place the website includes details about how homes and businesses can prepare themselves ahead of a flood. Advice includes details about preparing a flood kit, what you can do to reduce the potential for damage to your home and belongings and the importance of checking on neighbours especially the elderly, infirm and those with small children.

The recent wet weather experienced across the UK is a reminder of how flooding has the potential to cause widespread damage and loss which can be devastating to communities, families and businesses affected.
