THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE - ‘SHINE AWARDS 2010’

Bedford Borough’s ‘Shine Awards’ will be taking place on Friday 16th July, from 5 – 6.30pm, at Borough Hall, hosted by members of the Bedford Borough Youth Cabinet and Streetcred Group. The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, will be in attendance to distribute awards and congratulate participants.

The ceremony takes place at the tail end of Shine Week - which the previous government created to counteract negative perceptions of young people (the campaign runs from 12–16th July).

Individuals aged between 11–19 years-old who live, go to school, or take part in projects within the borough, are set to be awarded for personal achievements in categories such as creative arts, technology and volunteering work, and displays of leadership (as captain, group leader, community leader). The Shine Awards will provide a platform to explore this age groups area of talent.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The achievements of these young people will be celebrated at this inspirational ceremony. They have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and often triumphed against all odds, working tirelessly to achieve their goals and as a result have also become great role models within our community.”

Integrated Youth Support (IYS) are involving young people in a variety of activities that cover making a CD of music they have created, a mini Olympics and using technology to get fit.  IYS are also working with Youth Service Senior Volunteers and young people who have gained work through the Future Jobs Fund to help them to reflect on the journey they have taken and how they feel they have developed as young people since taking advantage of the opportunities they have been offered.

There will also be a Streetcred Panel Award for the best Streetcred project for 2009/2010, chosen by the assessment panel based on projects funded through the programme last year.

Award nominations were requested via Bedford Borough Council and required a referee from the project organisation, to ensure recommendations were valid.
